This town is situated very close to Kampala about 40 kilometers southwest and just close to Lake Victoria shores. For starters, it is here where Uganda’s international airport is located hence a main gateway into the country. Besides, it is here where the presidential second home is found and where the president lives.
Entebbe derived its name from Luganda word ‘Entebe’, that denotes a seat or chair. It is where the Baganda chiefs used to sit while solving legal conflicts. This place was adopted by the colonial government as the administrative center of Uganda. Currently, it is a home to Uganda Wildlife Education Center and incredible Botanical gardens which are its major tourist attractions. You can pay a visit to this wildlife education center and meet a number of species.
This city, best known for Uganda’s International Airport in the movie “Raid on Entebbe’ remains a sleepy town. Entebbe means seat in the local language, Luganda and indeed, was the seat of the colonial government prior to Independence in 1962.
The Botanical Gardens, located here, acted as the backdrop for several Tarzan movies. This reserve on the shores of Lake Victoria still has a tremendous variety of flora. Adjacent to the gardens is the Uganda Wildlife Education Centre, where lost and wounded animals are rehabilitated.
It takes about 45 minutes to travel the 37kms from the airport to Kampala. The road winds near the lake-shore in several places and passes through many villages.
